Where Aetna sits

Aetna runs along the Dunes Highway on Gary’s east side. Roughly, it’s bounded by the CSX tracks, Lake Street, 15th Avenue and I‑90, with the undeveloped floodplain of the Little Calumet River along its south and east edges.

It’s older than the city around it. Aetna began in 1881 as a company town for the Aetna Powder Works, an explosives maker, and Gary annexed it in 1928. Some of its buildings from the late 1920s and 1930s are art deco, and most of the housing today is single-family homes.

Roads the driver will use

• The Dunes Highway (U.S. 12), running east-west through the neighborhood
• Melton Road (U.S. 20), the other main road, lined with shops
• I‑65, at Aetna’s west end, the quickest way in from the rest of Gary
• The Miller South Shore Line station, at Aetna’s northeast corner

Parks as landmarks

Aetna has several small parks that work well as reference points: Glen Ryan Park, Aetna Park, the Aetna Playground and June Labroi Park. “Across from Glen Ryan Park” is often clearer than a house number.

Pickup notes for Aetna

• Which side of the highway. The Dunes Highway divides the neighborhood. Say which side the car is on so the truck approaches from the right direction.
• Driveways and side yards. With mostly single-family homes, many cars sit in a driveway or beside a garage. Tell us if another car has to move first.
• Near the floodplain. If the car is parked on soft ground at the edge of a lot, mention it.
