How to Sell a Wrecked Car

To sell a wrecked car, settle the insurance side first, get your paperwork together, then sell the car as it sits to a buyer who tows. Repairing, parting it out or letting the insurer take it are the other routes. Here's how each one plays out, in the order that saves you money and hassle.

How do you sell a wrecked car?

  1. Settle the insurance side first. Let the adjuster see the car and wait for their decision.
  2. Get the paperwork together. Title, lien release if there was a loan, and your ID.
  3. Take out your belongings and the license plate.
  4. Get an offer on the car as it is, describing the damage honestly.
  5. Arrange pickup from where it sits, so you don’t pay to move it twice.

That’s the whole job. The rest of this guide is about the decisions inside those steps.

Settle the insurance side first

Selling a car while a claim is still open can tangle the claim, so wait for the adjuster. What your policy pays for depends on the coverage. The Indiana Department of Insurance explains that collision coverage pays for damage to your car from a collision or upset, and comprehensive covers other losses like theft, fire, windstorm and glass breakage, usually with a deductible.

Two outcomes are common. The insurer pays for repairs, or the insurer decides the car is a total loss and pays its value. If they total it, you may be able to keep the car. In Indiana that comes with a salvage title deadline, covered in our guide to what to do when your car is totaled in Indiana.

No collision coverage on an older car? Then there’s no insurance decision to wait for, and you go straight to the options below.

Four ways out of a wrecked car

Option What it takes Best when
Repair it Estimates, parts, shop time, your money or the insurer’s The car is worth more fixed than the repair costs
Let the insurer take it Accept the total-loss payout and sign the car over The payout is fair and you don’t want the hassle
Part it out Tools, space, time, and buyers for each part You have all three and patience to match
Sell it as it is One call, one pickup You want it gone and paid for, fast

Parting out sounds like more money, and sometimes it is. But you’re left with a stripped shell that still has to go somewhere, and the time adds up fast. For most people with a crashed daily driver, selling it whole is the clean answer.

Is it worth selling a damaged car?

When the repair bill is bigger than what the car means to you, yes. A wrecked car still has value: working parts, metal, sometimes a sound engine behind a crushed bumper. Selling it as it is turns that into money without paying for the fix.

It’s also the answer when the car has become a problem. A wreck sitting in a driveway draws complaints from the landlord, leaks fluids and takes up the space you need for the next car.

Getting the most for a wrecked car

A few habits change the offer more than people expect:

  • Describe the damage the way it is. Which corner took the hit, whether a wheel is bent, whether the airbags went off. Surprises at pickup help nobody.
  • Keep the car whole. Pulling the battery, the wheels or the catalytic converter before selling can lower the offer, because the car is priced as a whole.
  • Have the keys. They unlock the steering and the shifter, which makes loading simpler.
  • Have the paperwork ready. The title makes things fastest. If it’s gone, order a $15 duplicate from the BMV; a car 15 model years old or older can instead go with a $4 BMV certificate of authority, and no car, old or new, sells to us with neither. Bring the list of papers you have to the call and we’ll confirm the route.

Paperwork in Indiana

Indiana’s BMV says the seller should remove the license plate at the time of the sale. The buyer and seller sections of the title both need to be completed when a title changes hands. If there was a loan on the car, you’ll need the lien release from the lender before the title is clear.

When it can’t be driven away

Most wrecked cars can’t. A bent wheel, a leaking radiator or a missing headlight turns a drive into a tow. That’s normal. Wrecked car removal in Gary covers how Junk Cars Gary picks up crashed cars where they sit, with free towing and payment at pickup.

Quick answers

Is it worth selling a damaged car?

Usually, when the repair costs more than the car is worth to you. A damaged car still has value as a whole car, and selling it as it is takes one call instead of weeks of repair quotes.

How do I get the most money for a wrecked car?

Describe the damage honestly, keep the car whole (don't pull the battery or the catalytic converter first), have the keys and paperwork ready, and get an offer on the car as it actually sits.

Can I sell a wrecked car without a title?

No title? We can still help, though in Indiana "without a title" still means with a paper. However old the wreck is, the sale goes through only with the title or a BMV certificate of authority: a lost title costs $15 to replace at the BMV, the certificate costs $4, and the certificate only replaces the title on a car at least 15 model years old. Below that age, a buyer taking the car with neither paper commits a felony. Say which papers you've kept since the crash (a bill of sale, the registration, the insurance card) and we'll confirm the route on the call.
